The value of small gestures

There has been some commentary of late on the nature of sympathy being expressed on social media through the use of hashtags. Of course it is true that we would probably all like to have the power to make more of a difference in the world. However, as Stephen Colbert, host of CBS’s The Late Show put it, ‘anything that is an attempt at human connection right now is positive.’

Great change is driven by public sentiment. No gesture, however small, is without value. That might be a hashtag, or it might be a private thought for others.

In the words of Edmund Burke, ‘Nobody made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could only do a little.’
